… as WBC Cup C’bean C/ships set to box off May 1 at CASH
WITH the World Boxing Council (WBC) championships set to box off on May 1, five more weight divisions in the Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) will be decided on February 25, when the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) hosts its WBC Cup Caribbean Championships at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH). Headlining this card will be former World Boxing Association (WBA) cruiserweight champion Wayne ‘Big Truck’ Brathwaite who will return to the squared circle on the local scene and look to restore Guyanese pride, when he faces Barbados’ Shawn ‘The Sniper’ Cox for the WBC/CABOFE heavyweight title.
It is less than two months ago, when ‘The Sniper’ picked out national heavyweight champion Kurt Bess, unleashing several combinations to the body and head of Bess on his way to a first -ound TKO win at the same venue.
Following that win, many persons called for a matchup between the Barbadian and Brathwaite, a cry that did not fall on deaf ears, as the two will decide who will enter the WBC Championships as the CABOFE heavyweight champion.
National middleweight champion Edmond De Clou will take on Trinidad and Tobago’s Kevin Placide for the WBC/CABOFE middleweight title in the main supporting bout, while Elton ‘Coolie Bully’ Dharry returns from the USA to defend his WBC/CABOFE bantamweight title against Barbados-based Guyanese Selwyn Lett.
Dexter ‘The Kid’ Marques and Berbice’s Orlon ‘Pocket Rocket’ Rogers will match gloves in the flyweight division for the WBC/CABOFE title which will serve as an opener for the night’s proceedings, followed by the WBC/CABOFE super lightweight clash between Revlon Lake, another Barbados-based Guyanese pugilist and Barbados’ Miguel Antoine.
The signing of contracts for this epic encounter, which will for the first time see five titles go up for grabs on the local boxing scene, will take place this afternoon in the boardroom of Abdool and Abdool Insurance Services.
President of the GBBC Peter Abdool has also taken the liberty to inform boxers and boxing enthusiasts that the official pass which is being used for the ProAm Friday Night Fights will not be allowed while admission to the venue will be announced later.
In the last ProAm Friday Night Fights, Simeon ‘Candyman’ Hardy recorded a stunning ninth round TKO win over national welterweight champion Iwan ‘Pure Gold’ Azore, to win the WBC/CABOFE welterweight title and earn a place in the championships.
It is left to be seen after February 25, who will join Hardy as WBC/CABOFE champion heading into the championships in their respective weight categories.
