… takes career-best 8 for 17
CAVE HILL, Barbados (CMC) – Sunil Narine continued to weave his web around leaden-footed, unsure batsmen, almost singlehandedly bowling Trinidad & Tobago to an emphatic, 172-run victory over Combined Campuses & Colleges in the Regional 4-Day Tournament on Sunday. The T&T off-spinner enhanced his growing reputation with a career-best eight wickets for 17 runs from 14.1 overs, as CCC, chasing 287 for victory, were dismissed for 114 in their second innings on the third day of their day/night first round match at the Three Ws Oval.
Narine, playing in only his third first-class match for the Red Fury, ended with the amazing match figures of 13 for 39 from 30.1 overs, making him a shoo-in for the Man-of-the-Match award, after the CCC, led by Jason Holder’s 27, offered only token resistance.
Fast bowler Shannon Gabriel, playing on familiar turf having been a graduate of the West Indies High Performance Centre based at this ground, supported with two for 31 from 12 overs.
The 23-year-old Narine formalised the result about 50 minutes before the scheduled close on a rain-marred evening, when fittingly Ryan Austin, the T&T-born Barbadian off-spinner, drove him to mid-on and was caught.
The result meant that T&T, eyeing their first R4T title in six years, gained 12 points and CCC, last year’s beaten finalists, ended with no points.
Red Fury have drawn a bye for the second round, starting on Friday, when the CCC will host Leeward Islands at the same venue with both sides looking for a point.
The visitors, starting the day on 106 for five, were bowled out for 168 in their second innings about 45 minutes before lunch.
T&T captain Denesh Ramdin, the West Indies wicketkeeper/batsman, hit the top score of 40 after adding four to his overnight total.
Narine, who bats left-handed, was not out on 34 and put on 35 for the last wicket with Gabriel.
Holder laid the groundwork for a useful all-round performance, taking five for 48 from 16 overs and was the most successful CCC bowler, while Austin collected two for 52 to end with a match-haul of nine for 136.
Gabriel started the rout for T&T, when fellow Trinidadian Yannick Ottley was caught behind for 13 in the first over after CCC reached lunch on 22 without loss.
The rugged fast bowler also trapped CCC captain Romel Currency lbw for 17 playing defensively forward, leaving the hosts 41 for two.
T&T’s bowlers made sure that runs came at a premium, paving the way for Narine to run through the remainder of the CCC batting, starting with Raymon Reifer caught behind for nine, setting CCC back on 49 for three.
Narine bowled Nkrumah Bonner behind his back for eight to trigger a collapse that saw the home team lose five wickets for 13 in the space of 35 deliveries, crashing to 79 for eight.
He had Chadwick Walton caught at silly point for his second duck of the match, trapped Floyd Reifer plumb lbw for two lunging onto the front foot again before Kevin McClean was caught behind for three and Kyle Corbin was lbw on the back-foot for eight.
Corbin, one of the top batsmen for CCC last season, had retired hurt on eight at 84 for five before he returned at the fall of McClean’s wicket.
T&T ran into defiance from Holder and Austin, the pair resolutely putting on 33 for the ninth wicket in a bid to force the match into the final day, but Narine had Holder caught at mid-off before snaring Austin to bring a swift end.
