BASANT PANCHMI will be observed today a release from the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha said
President of the Sabha, Pandit Reepu Daman Persaud has invited all Mandirs to make preparations to plant Holika. According to Pandit Persaud Basant Panchmi is the fifth day of the bright half of the eleventh Hindu month of Maagh. It marks the beginning of Basant Ritu or the Spring Season. There is indication from the fields and gardens, crops and plants start emerging in bloom and blossoms. Kissans or Peasants, whose lives are dominated by the change of the seasons express their admiration of nature’s beauty and usher in the season by singing Holi songs, Chowtaal, Dhamaar and Jati renditions. Chowtaal groups come to life and sing throughout the season in Mandirs and homes.
On Basant Panchmi Saraswati Mata is worshipped. Students seek her inspiration for the gifts of intellectual alertness and scholarship. They seek infinite knowledge whilst singers and musicians adore Her for blessings of mellifluous voice.
The observance of Basant Panchmi emanates from the belief that every season remains in the embryonic stage for forty days and thus Holi or Phagwah is celebrated forty days after the symbolic planting of the castor oil tree. In the ceremony called Holika Dahan, on the eve of Holi a pyre is built around the tree and burnt, symbolic of evil in Holika’s cruel act of seeking to have her own nephew consumed. Instead she was and Prince Prahalad escaped unscathed, emphasizing the triumph of Good over Evil.
Basant Panchmi is an appropriate day to begin studies of the Vedas “Basant Brahanamn Miyaar”.
In the Bhagwad Gita Lord Krishna declared that among the seasons, “I am the flowery spring”.
On Basant Panchmi Hindus will assemble in their mandirs and perform Saraswati puja, sing chowtaal and in a charged atmosphere inaugurate the season. The community is engulfed in a spiritual and happy atmosphere.
“It is our wish and we strongly advocate that the entire season leading to Phagwah or Holi be celebrated according to our Dharma,” Pandit Persaud exhorted.
Alcoholic beverage is seriously restricted, the Sbaha said Phagwah will be celebrated on Thursday March 8. 2012.
The Sabha said a special Satsangh will be held at Shri Krishna Mandir, Campbellville today at 6:00 p.m. All are invited
