PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) – Azim Bassarath rubbished claims by Minister of Sport Anil Roberts about the healthy state of the Trinidad & Tobago Cricket Board’s finances.
The T&TCB president said the Sports Minister’s claims were far from the truth and the national governing body would make a full response in due course.
Roberts said this week that the T&TCB had US$850 000 stashed away in its bank account and also had an investment in St Lucia.
He said he had given instructions to ministry officials not to fund any of the T&TCB’s activities until they had used up the stash for the development of the sport.
“I wish that the T&TCB had that type of money, but I’m not aware of any (US$850 000) anywhere,” said Bassarath.
“To my knowledge, there’s no investment in St Lucia, but I don’t know if the previous regime had something there of which we are not aware.”
“As far as the board is concerned, we don’t consider it to be a serious issue at all. We have taken note of the minister’s comments and we are going to respond appropriately in due time.”
Bassarath was speaking at the time during a media conference to announce a new TV deal with a local broadcaster to show elements of the T&T Premier League competition.
