Gonsalves named captain of Las Vegas 7s team

A TEAM of twelve has been named by the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) to participate in the Rugby USA, Las Vegas Invitational Sevens Tournament which is scheduled for February 9 – 11, and it will be led by newly appointed captain Ryan Gonsalves. According to the union, the team’s participation in this tournament will provide the team with an elite level of competition for the HSBC Sevens World Series in Hong Kong from March 23 to 25; a tournament which could be the yardstick for qualification to the 2016 World Cup.
Gonsalves leads vice-captain Elwin Chase, Theodore Henry, Richard Staglon, Rupert Giles, Vallon Adams, Dwayne Schroeder, Ryan Gonsalves, Rickford Cummings, Ryan Hinckson, Claudius Butts, Ronald Mayers and Peabo Hamilton.
Henry, who will be participating with the team, is also the head coach of the side with Kenneth Grant-Stuart as his assistant while former national player Robin Roberts was named as the manager of the team and Barrington Browne – the physiotherapist. The team is scheduled to wing out on February 6.
The reserves named were Walter George, Troy Bascom, Avery Corbin and Rodwell Hutson.
Guyana qualified for the HSBC Sevens Series after rallying to their sixth consecutive North American and Caribbean Rugby Association (NACRA) Sevens title in November when it was hosted in the ‘Land of the Flying Fish’.
