BUILDING on the fruitful relations between the Guyana Government and the Salvation Army, Finance Minister, Dr. Ashni Singh yesterday joined with scores of well-wishers and members of the Army to welcome the newly appointed Divisional leaders. During the installation service at the Army’s Alexander Street Division, Major Emmerson and Carolinda Cumberbatch were appointed Divisional Commander and Divisional Director of Women’s Ministries.
Dr. Singh, in brief remarks, spoke of the outstanding work by the Army over the years, noting that the institution “was well served” by its leaders.
Over the years, government has played an integral role in supporting the work of the Salvation Army, especially in rehabilitating drug addicts. This has seen $5M being injected to assist in offsetting expenses incurred during the programme, and the approval of the Men’s Social Centre Refurbishment project, for which $18M was given.
“The Army has done outstanding work over the years, including its role in the implementation of social programmes which have been successful in touching the lives of Guyanese,” Minister Singh said.
According to the Finance Minister, the Administration has always placed social development on the ‘front burner’; and as such, has committed to working hand-in-hand with the Salvation Army.
“We believe that every citizen has a contribution to make to society, and as such, I must re-affirm our government’s commitment to the continued support to the successful implementation of social programmes within the institution,” Dr. Singh said.
The Salvation Army is an international body that functions in over 120 countries worldwide, with charitable work as its prime objective.
