Parliamentary developments not conducive to harmony

– according to IAC
THE Indian Arrival Committee (IAC) said it has noted with grave concern the outcome of the convening of the 10th Parliament of Guyana on Thursday last.
The IAC, in a statement, said it believes that the selection of Mr. Raphael Trotman as Speaker;
Mrs. Deborah Backer as Deputy Speaker, and the foregone conclusion that Mr. David Granger, will become the Leader of the Opposition, is counterproductive for ethnic harmony.
The IAC said it would not be couched into believing that the selection of these individuals is merely coincidental, but a deliberate and well orchestrated manoeuvre to impose such ethnic imbalance upon the Guyanese people.
Further, the IAC said it is not oblivious of the deliberations between A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and former PNCR Member of Parliament, Raphael Trotman, prior to the convening of the 10th Parliament.

The IAC feels that such deliberations were planned to ensure that APNU commands a Speaker it is most comfortable with given Mr. Trotman’s political genes. In addition, the IAC said it believes that such deliberations can only be described as dishonest and fraudulent in the context of the tripartite discussions which were magnanimously initiated by H.E. President Donald Ramotar.
“The departure from what was initially agreed, has not only breached the convention of Commonwealth countries, but has led to the deliberate duping of prominent Indo-Guyanese for the positions mentioned,” the IAC stated.
The Committee reiterates that such developments cannot be conducive to national cohesion in this multiethnic, multi-religious and multicultural society.

The IAC said it wishes to remind the Opposition Parties that during the election campaign, they vociferously articulated for inclusiveness and for the winner not to take all. “The recent developments in Parliament are a clear deviation from this and can only be construed as hypocritical utterances to garner votes,” it posited.
The IAC is calling on all Guyanese to be cognisant of these developments and not to be hoodwinked into believing that the Opposition is serious about unity and ethnic balance.
