Caledonia and Pele through to final four

TRINIDAD and Tobago’s Neal and Massy Caledonia AIA and Pele both recorded 3-1 victories over their quarter-final opponents, to become the two teams to advance to the final four of this year’s Kashif and Shanghai Football tournament, which continued at the Beterverwagting Community Centre ground, Wednesday night.
In the opening game of the double-header, Pele got the better of Bartica’s Mill Ballers while Caledonia won via the same score line over Victoria Kings, as both teams advanced to tonight’s semifinals in the 22nd edition of the tournament.
After playing to a scoreless first half, Pele eventually defeated the Region 7 team, when Mervin Joseph found the back of the net in the 58th minute, only to see Conrad Smith record the equaliser four minutes later for Mill Ballers.
Devon Millington took his tally in the tournament to seven goals when he capitalised on a Konata Manning shot that was too much for the Mill Ballers custodian to handle in the 89th minute, giving Pele a 2-1 lead in the final stages of the game.
Mill Ballers were probably thinking about the equalising goal once again, when national striker Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson was brought down in the penalty area and the dapper striker easily converted his own kick to seal the win for Pele.
In the feature encounter, reigning East Demerara Football Association champions Victoria Kings were defeated on the tactical side of football, even though the final score line did not indicate to those who witnessed as well as missed the action the level of football that was played by both teams.
Despite the loss, the locals gave a good account of themselves against their opponents, who are one of the top Pro-League clubs in the Twin Island Republic.
Trevor Caesar’s goal which was recorded eleven minutes into the game sent Caledonia AIA into the lead, as he completed a perfectly-timed pass from his skipper Walter ‘Boyd’ Moore to beat the Kings’ custodian.
Versatile striker Winston Pompey capitalised on a defensive blunder from the Trinidadians in front of their goal area, to snatch the equaliser for the Kings who went into lemon time with the scores level at one goal.
Not wanting to disappoint, and probably thinking that their reputation was at stake, a purposeful-looking Caledonia AIA took the field for the second half with one thing in mind – to dominate and outplay their lesser known opponents.
Such display resulted in the visitors scoring their second goal off the boot of Jamaal Gray in the 54th minute, which was followed by the injection of the leading T&T Pro-League striker Devon Jorsling into the game.
Moore scored a beauty of his own, when he worked his way down the left wing, forcing the defence and even the Kings custodian to attack, leaving him to simply lob the ball into an empty goal to hand his team a two-goal advantage and eventually a comfortable win.
