IT IS quite surprising that retired Police Commissioner Winston Felix should have considered it necessary to make a public call for the resignation of Police Commissioner Henry Greene over a rape allegation that is currently under investigation.As far as is known, an official complaint was lodged with the Brickdam Police Station last week by the woman who is the alleged rape victim. She was accompanied to the station by her lawyer.
Subsequently, the Alliance for Change (AFC) called for Greene to be interdicted. The Crime Chief, Seelall Persaud, has told the media that the matter was currently under investigation and he could not offer further comment at this time. For his part, Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee, said he had no comment on the matter being investigated.
Commissioner Greene, on the other hand, has expressed shock over the rape allegation and said  let “God be the judge”. He said the allegation by the woman was now with his lawyer and had no further comment on whether he would proceed on vacation leave while independent investigation was taking place
Our further inquiry into the matter has confirmed that while the Police Commissioner  does have vacation leave that he could utilise during the investigation, legally he could neither be interdicted from duty nor compelled to temporarily step down from office.
In reacting to Felix’s call to tender his resignation on the basis of the rape allegation against him, Greene has reminded the media that it was public knowledge that there were serious differences with his predecessor over a controversial recorded telephone conversation and that to this day his challenge for proof about claimed bugging of his (Felix’s) office has not been responded to.
The latest contention of Commissioner Greene is that retired Commissioner Felix “has an axe to grind”, and that he was “not at all surprised by this self-appointed intervention” in the rape allegation.
