Rumours give rise to tension in the capital city
THERE was some tension in Georgetown yesterday afternoon as citizens awaited the official announcement of the results of the 2011 General and Regional Elections from the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM). Some schools dismissed their students just after lunch, and after word got around that persons had attempted to rob a popular store of Sheriff Street, Campbellville, businessmen on Regent Street began putting up their shutters.
Rumours that groups from certain villages on the East Coast Demerara were on their way to the city to await the final elections announcement heightened the tension. More businesses shut their doors.
Soon there was a huge crowd at the Stabroek bus park and the park along Avenue of the Republic and Regent Street, as commuters hurried to get home.
Meanwhile, police remained on high-alert, having also heard some of the rumours that persons were coming into the city to cause trouble.
