THIS letter is intended to urge all Guyanese to turn out on elections day and cast their ballots. Voting in national and regional elections is not only a right but also a sacred duty. By your vote you will determine the future direction of this country. As you enter that polling booth, you need to ask yourself which from among the contesting parties you can trust to lead this nation over the next five years. The answer is simple. It can only be the PPP/C which has been with the people of Guyana for the past 60 years, during which time it has scored major gains including that right to vote. The PPP led the struggle for a free, democratic and independent Guyana and when that democracy was taken away in the elections of 1968, it was the PPP that led the struggle for a return to a democratic Guyana.
Thanks to the PPP we live in a new Guyana. This is a Guyana where there is equal opportunity for all regardless of race, religion or political affiliation. This is a Guyana where our children are doing us proud by topping the Caribbean at regional examinations. This is a Guyana where our young people can own a piece of land and raise a family and are not condemned to live in rented houses for their entire lives. This is a Guyana where every child who has the potential to benefit from higher education would be provided with that opportunity. The days when only the rich could have afforded to send their children overseas to become doctors, lawyers and engineers are now over. Today, the sons and daughters of ordinary workers are taking up leading positions in the management of the country’s affairs.
Guyana today is a land of opportunity. It was not always like this. There was a time when the principle of meritocracy was sacrificed on the altar of party paramountcy. Our young people suffered immensely by such discriminatory and shortsighted policies.
Guyana under a Donald Ramotar presidency will continue along the path of progress and sustainable human development. Let us not gamble with the country’s future. Too much is at stake. Vote for continued prosperity of Guyana.
