THE Police have refuted statements made on a Chandra Narine Sharma (CNS) Channel Six television and in Kaieteur News about an incident that took place on Wednesday at Non Pariel, East Coast Demerara. The Police said investigations, up to now, revealed that members of the Community Policing Group (CPG) were not involved in the assault of the three men who were injured but that, upon their arrival at the scene, assisted the Police in taking the victims for medical attention.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) denied the report in yesterday’s Kaieteur News, under the caption ‘Youths suffer vigilante beating’, that residents blocked the public road in protest against the incident.
The Police are satisfied that it was not a racially motivated occurrence and that the youths were workers in the area and their actions may have created some misunderstanding on the part of the shop owner who raised an alarm.
The GPF appealed to all communities to continue exercising good common sense and be more patient and long-suffering.
Meanwhile, Police are investigating what happened when three youths were, reportedly, assaulted by a number of residents, about 12:00 hrs on Wednesday, November 23, at Non Pariel.
The investigations, so far, have revealed that four youths went into a shop that is owned by Rebita Abdool, 34, in Kellman Street, Non Pariel. The owner and her 13-year- old niece were in it and the youths, who were unarmed, made some enquiries, from the niece, about bicycle parts.
Owner panicked
The quartet requested that the counter door be opened for them to have a look at the parts but, upon hearing this request, the owner panicked and ran to the back of the premises, believing the four to be bandits, because, about two months ago, she had experienced an armed robbery.
The woman then experienced a short black-out and, upon regaining normalcy, shouted for “thief”, causing a number of neighbours to respond and confront the youths, one of whom managed to ride away on a bicycle.
The other three were attacked by the residents who were armed with cutlasses, spades and sticks, resulting in Shakeel Answick, 16, of Company Road, receiving chops to his head, foot and hand; Mark Lustal, 16, of Cummings Street and Lancelot Griffith, 17, also of Company Road, Buxton, being assaulted about their bodies.
Police responded promptly to the report received and took the three injured youths to Buxton Health Centre, on East Coast Demerara, too, where they were treated and sent away.
They were then taken to Vigilance Police Station where they gave statements. They later complained of feeling unwell and were conveyed to Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) for further medical attention where they were, again, treated and sent away.
Police said it has been confirmed that the victims are employed with a construction company that is building a number of homes in the Non Pariel area under the Ministry of Housing.
Three men have since been arrested and are in Police custody assisting with the investigations and the Police are reviewing the tape from a Close Circuit Television Camera (CCTV) that is installed at the shop.
