THE Georgetown Football Club (GFC) will be buzzing with activity from 17:00hrs this afternoon, as the curtain comes down on the inaugural Government of Guyana-sponsored Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport-organised national Inter-block 7:15 tournament culminates. Six teams, who were victorious in their village and district phases of the tournament, will converge on the venue this afternoon with their throng of supporters, to do battle for the $150 000 first prize and trophy.
With all the teams being awarded $50 000 for their championship effort in their respective villages, only the overall winner and runner-up will be rewarded at the end of today’s action, with the runner-up taking home $75 000 and a trophy.
In the first match, Hopetown, who topped the Berbice zone of the tournament, will take on First Street Warriors the Campbellville champions, whose lineup includes the formidable Orlando Gilgeous and Maurice Prince.
Stewartville All Stars from West Bank Demerara and Grove Back Street the East Bank champions will collide in the second match, with the East Bank champions cause being pushed by Orson Francois, Domini Garnett and Levi Brathwaite.
The third fixture will pit Hopetown against the East Coast Demerara champions Company Road out of Buxton and certainly, Tyrone Warren, Denver Dennis and brothers Randy and Michael Phill, will want to show the fans they deserve to take home the first prize back to Buxton.
Grove Back Street will then match skills with Campbellville’s First Street Warriors, followed by Linden’s champions One Mile, led by Seon Brewley, Rawle Gittens, Trevor Tudor and Marlon Maxius, versus Stewartville.
The two top teams will clash in the final, following which Parliamentary Secretary within the MCYS, Steve Ninvalle, who lauded the various teams for their sporadic efforts in making the tournament a success, will present the championship trophy and other prizes to the respective winners.
