Essequibo Coast rice farmers busy sowing

RICE farmers on the Essequibo Coast are busy sowing their fields with seed paddy for the spring crop that will be harvested in March 2012. According to reports, thousands of acres, between Aurora and Walton Hall, have already been sown while preparations are in progress in areas in the extreme North and Cozier.
Farmers said the weather condition is ideal and the Regional Administration has released water from the main irrigation canal and conservancies in a very timely and efficient manner for the purpose.
Some 32,500 acres are being cultivated with the aim of surpassing the one million bags target for the season.
Planters said production in the industry is moving upwards every crop because of government’s input to maintain access dams and an efficient drainage and irrigation (D&I) network.
They are also provided with quality seeds, they said.
