YESTERDAY marked one year since Winston Shripal Murray, CCH, LLB, MP, former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Trade and Industry passed to the great beyond. In memory of this great son of the soil, a memorial soft ball cricket competition was held last Sunday, at Leguan where seven teams, both male and female, and hundreds of supporters were present.
Among those present were Mrs. Marva Murray, Chairman of the PNCR, Mr. Bishwaishwar ‘Cammie’ Ramsaroop, CCH, former Finance Minister and A.P.N.U executive, Mr. Carl Greenidge.
Mrs. Murray in her remarks reflected on the many days when Winston would put the country that he so love first on his agenda and with tears settled in her eyes she expressed heartfelt gratitude to Mark Walkes, member of the Central Executive Committee of the PNCR, for arranging this event and most of all remembering this humble servant.
According to a statement from the PNCR, she also expressed sincere thanks to the many donors for their generous donation of trophies.
Mr. Cammie Ramsaroop reflected on the many days and nights when Winston fought in parliament for all Guyanese. He also stressed on how a good colleague and respected worker Cde. Murray was. In his own words, “Guyana has indeed lost a great son of the soil.”
Mr. Carl Greenidge who was delivering the final words at the opening ceremony spoke of how much Winston loved cricket and loved to see young people play the game. “Winston Murray was a cricketer from the island,” he said. Mr. Greenidge also told the hundreds gathered: “If you aspire to become an honest politician and a man of integrity, read about Winston Murray and ask around about him.’”
PNCR said the actual game started at around 12 noon and ended at around 4:00 pm. It was indeed a memorable occasion for a great man that will never be forgotten.
