– pinned by truck tray
Leon Phillips, 32, called ‘Big Head’, of W ½ Lot 107 Regent Road, Bourda, Georgetown, was killed yesterday afternoon when the tray of a truck  came down and pinned him while he was attempting to fix the hydraulic system. This mishap occurred at the corner of Church and Albert Streets, Alberttown. It is suspected that Phillips suffered a broken neck when the wooden prop supporting the tray collapsed and pinned him. When he was finally extricated and placed on the grass verge near the truck, he was already dead.
An unnamed truck driver at the scene told the Guyana Chronicle that three trucks were transporting debris from Church Street, and Phillips had asked him to wait for him, since the tray of Phillips’ truck was sticking.
He added that when they drove off, Phillips’ tray was halfway up; and at the corner of Albert and Church Streets, Phillips stopped to fix the tray, and was between the cab and the tray when the wooden prop suddenly collapsed and caused the tray to pin him down.
When this newspaper showed up at the scene,  Phillips lay on the grass verge and the accident scene was being processed by the police, including being photographed.
As news of the tragedy spread, the man’s distraught fiancée arrived on scene, and was in tears as she saw her loved one’s lifeless body lying on the ground, surrounded by scores of passersby, police, the media and others.
She was placed to sit in a car, weeping as she briefly spoke to the media.
She said that she had heard of the accident and had come to see what had happened. Phillips was reportedly employed with RRT Enterprise, located on Regent Road, Bourda and was like a ‘stepson’ to his employer Sean Ramrattan, who was also on the scene but too grieved to speak.
The father of one had grown up from childhood with Sean Ramrattan’s family, and was also employed by them.
