Miller to face Squires for Men’s Singles title in 2010 rematch
…  survives scare from top junior Gavin Lewis
ON an action packed day in the Pegasus tennis tournament , top junior player  Gavin Lewis provided number one seed and defending champion Jeremy Miller with much more than he bargained for in their semi-final encounter.
The quality of the match was befitting a semi-final as both players went for their shots and hit numerous winners.
Fifteen year old Lewis who is a consistent baseliner surprised Miller with his good serving and ventures to the net.
Several games went to 3 to 4 deuces before the 20 year old Miller used his experience to win the games. The 6-2 first set scoreline was not reflective of the closeness of the match.
In the second set Lewis raced off to a 3-0 lead with play that left Miller searching for answers.
Forcing a deciding set was not to be as Lewis faded after taking an injury timeout and lost the next six games to Miller who seized the momentum and booked his place in the Finals where he will have a rematch with Phillip Squires.
Squires overcame the consistent semi-finalist Leyland Leacock 6-3 6-2 as his sharper groundstrokes and serve allowed him to get past the hard working Leacock. Squires matchup with Miller is keenly anticipated and Squires will be keen to avenge his loss to Miller last year.
The ladies final will see number one seed Berbician Carol Humphrey taking on top junior Shawna Gentle after she easily got past ITF St Vincent Under 14 Girls champion Aretta Dey 6-1 6-1 in their semi-final encounter.
Shawna Gentle, however, had a much tougher time against talented thirteen year old Nicola Ramdyhan whose consistent groundstrokes and determination allowed her to take the first set 6-3 against the complacent Gentle.
Gentle turned the tide in the second set winning 6-1 to force the super tiebreak decider. Gentle’s tactic of keeping the ball in play with the pressure on allowed her to book her place in the finals as she won 10-6.
Andre Lopes booked his place in the Men’s Over – 35 Singles final when he won decisively against veteran Rudy Grant 6-3 6-0 .
Lopes will face his doubles partner Carlos Adams in the final today after the pair had earlier claimed the Men’s 35 doubles title on Saturday
