Not riot police, but ranks on patrol duty
THE police in a release yesterday confirmed that ranks on duty at a PPP/C political meeting Friday at the Stabroek Market Square in the heart of the city have arrested three men found to be disrupting the assemblage.
According to the police, proceedings commenced at about 18:30hrs and were in progress when a crowd of about 200 persons, some of whom carried photographs of APNU presidential candidate David Granger while others variously carried APNU flags and jerseys, converged on the area and began heckling the speakers.
The arrests, they say, followed the hecklers’ insistence on disrupting the meeting in spite of being warned by ranks on duty to desist from their unruly behaviour. The three were, however, warned and sent away.
And, a policewoman attempting to arrest a female who was also bent on disturbing the meeting was thwarted by the pressing crowd, which not only caused both women to fall to the ground, but allowed the civilian’s cronies to whisk her away to safety.
Meanwhile, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) has clarified a report in yesterday’s edition of the Stabroek News relative to the same PPP/C meeting, which claimed that riot police ranks were dispatched to the area.
In refutation, the police said the ranks referred to were members of a police patrol who were on their way to perform road block duties but responded to a call to assist other ranks who were at the meeting.
