I write on a matter that I feel  the public has a right to know about. It has to do with the conduct of two Justices of the Peace and the Commissioners of Oaths to Affidavits.
One had no legal training but is advertising all sorts of legal services. He is even mis-representing himself as a Marriage Officer. Recently, I met him concerning the marriage of my son who resides in New York.  And he assured me that he can complete the marriage.
What he did was to complete  a marriage petition form by which a Marriage Licence was obtained. With the licence, all parties proceeded to his office.
There we were informed by him that his secretary will accompany us to a pastor.
Sir, imagine our surprise. We are Hindus and we were told we will go to a pastor. I asked for a refund and was told that the pastor was already paid. So we went to the pastor.
While at the pastor I saw the secretary giving him an envelope which I suspected contained money. I asked the pastor the cost of performing the ceremony and was told $5,000. My son paid US$200.

The other is a JP and Marriage Officer residing in Georgetown. Persons wanting to get married have to carry photographs of themselves which is not mandated by law. If they do not have suits they have to rent them from this individual at a cost of $11,000 each. The marriage fee is $35,000 and the place of marriage is usually the Botanic Gardens or the Promenade Gardens.
The situation is worse if a request is made to do a wedding ceremony at certain places of worship. You have to pay for the marriage, the use of the church, the choir, the curtains, flowers, etc. It can cost up to $100,000 only for the ceremony. Some pastors and pandits who are Marriage Officers do photography and rent music systems.
This is how poor people are being ripped off.
