CELEBRATED this year under the theme: ‘Our Culture, our heritage, our life; A Fusion of Indigenous Diversity’ the two-day Amerindian Heritage Sports and Family Fun day concluded yesterday as hundreds of spectators converged at the Carifesta Sports Complex to join the fun- filled activities. The event, staged by the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs in its continued observation of Amerindian Heritage Month, was officially launched on Saturday, amidst the excited expectations of Amerindians from across the regions.
Among the numerous activities planned for the celebrations were several sporting events, including the finals of the volleyball and cricket matches, along with paiwari drinking and pepper pot eating contests and ‘lime and spoon’ races.
A bright, sunny day welcomed the participants from as far as Region 9 (Upper Takutu/Upper Essequibo) to the venue and for those who simply wanted to relax and bask in the rich cultural aspects of the indigenous peoples, they were able to sample the many delicious Amerindian dishes and beverages on sale and to participate in numerous activities planned for the day.
“I come here every year, me and my family and this year has also been fun for us. We enjoy the sports activities the most and what is even nicer is that we get to see our many friends from all over on this day,” Marie Taylor, from St. Cuthbert’s Mission explained. (Sonell Nelson photos)
