FOOD for the Poor (Guyana) Inc. (FFP) made a donation to the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, Wednesday, for onward distribution to the indigenous people in various communities. FFP Executive Director, Mr. Leon Davis said it was in keeping with the organisation’s mandate to contribute to the development of the less fortunate in Guyana, as well as to commemorate Amerindian Heritage Month, being celebrated currently.
At the presentation, he said: “We would like to wish the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs a happy Amerindian Heritage Month and we intend to continue giving assistance to Amerindians. On behalf of the Chairman and Board of Directors, it is a pleasure to hand over these things, especially on this auspicious occasion.”
Accepting the gifts on behalf of the Ministry, the Permanent Secretary, Collin Croal expressed gratitude to FFP and noted that the presentation is indeed a timely one.
“I want to thank FFP for, once again, responding and meeting the required needs of our Amerindian brothers and sisters,” he said.
Croal gave his assurances that, though it poses a challenge to render assistance to the Amerindian brothers and sisters located in remote areas, the Ministry will ensure that the items donated will be accounted for and distributed as required.
Davis also announced that FFP will soon be presenting the Ministry with a set of computer training kits, inclusive of monitors, also intended to be distributed.
Croal said that will complement the One Laptop per Family (OLPF) programme and would, definitely, fast track the process, as President Bharrat Jagdeo has mentioned, he would like everyone to become computer literate and bridge the divide.
Earlier this week, FFP presented a quantity of household and personal items to the New Amsterdam and Corriverton Amerindian Student Hostels, in Berbice, for the further development of the two institutions and Croal acknowledged that the gifted things would help make the lives of the students living there, more comfortable.
