THE Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) has selected a large contingent to represent this country at the Ronald Wilson Memorial competition, scheduled for Barbados, November 30 – December 5.
GABA president Steve Ninvalle said yesterday that the Selection Committee met recently and identified 11 boxers for the tournament.
The boxers will be accompanied by two coaches, a manager and two referees/judge. “It’s part of a plan to keep exposing our fighters to international competition. We have included several young fighters who really need the exposure,” Ninvalle said.
Six of the boxers identified represented Guyana at the ALBA Games while two are at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Isle of Man.
Ninvalle said that he plans making contact with Barbados tomorrow to find out if females can be included in the team. “We only have a few female boxers and it’s quite tough for them to get fights locally since they are in different divisions.
If we can get one or two of them to Barbados it would be a shot in the arm,” the GABA president said. The boxers are Imran Khan, Bert Braithwaite, Samuel Primo, Stefan Gouveia, Markember Pierrie, Ron Smith, Eon Bancroft, Dexter Wray, Richard Williamson, Benjamin Henry and Marvin Ageday. Lennox Daniels is the manager while GABA Technical Director Terrence Poole and James are the two coaches who will accompany the team.
Ramona Agard and Keith Campbell are the referees/judge. Meanwhile, Ninvalle disclosed that both Henry and Ageday lost their bouts at the Commonwealth Youth Games.
