Trial of teenaged murder accused adjourned to Monday
THE trial of now 18-year-old Rooplall Abrahim called Vijai, accused, at the Berbice Assizes, of unlawfully killing Kavita Panday, has been adjourned to Monday.
The lifeless body of the murder victim was found floating at Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice, two years ago.
The adjournment followed submissions, by defence counsel Mursulene Bacchus, on Thursday, in the absence of the jury, after state counsel Donelle Weaver introduced additional statements which were not presented at the preliminary inquiry (PI).
Consequently, Justice Dawn Gregory-Barnes postponed further hearing until the new week.
Then 13-year-old Panday was last seen in company of a male riding towards her parents’ farm on a canal embankment, where she had ventured to chase cows.
After she failed to return home, a frantic search was launched and, within minutes, her battered body, clad in tights, other underwear and skirt below the knee, was discovered afloat in a trench.
A post mortem examination revealed that the girl died as a result of asphyxia due to drowning and multiple injuries.
