INDIA have called up right-handed batsman Manoj Tiwary to replace the injured Rohit Sharma for the remainder of their one-day international series against England.
Sharma will become the seventh player to fly home from India’s difficult tour after he was ruled out of the series with a fractured finger suffered in Saturday’s rained off opener at Chester-le-Street. Sharma was struck on the gloves with the first ball he faced from Stuart Broad and immediately left the ground in obvious discomfort.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India confirmed Tiwary as his replacement on their official Twitter page.
India are also waiting on the fitness of star man Sachin Tendulkar after he missed the game with a sore right big toe.
The injury flared up on the morning of the match with Tendulkar due to see a specialist today..
The injuries continue India’s terrible run since arriving in England with Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan, Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Ishant Sharma and Harbhajan Singh having already returned home.
The world champions wereSaturday missing seven of the team that won the World Cup final against Sri Lanka on April 2.
India will be hoping that Tiwary will be ready in time to join the team in time for Tuesday’s second match at the Rose Bowl, with their batting stocks diminished.
Tiwary, 25, has made just three ODI appearances for India and averaged just 8.67 in those games. (PA Sport).
