Was Kennedy distracted during National Security meeting on communist takeover of British Guiana?
On May 5th, 1961, when these photos were taken, United States President John F. Kennedy was attending a National Security Council meeting about the possibility of a communist takeover of British Guiana when his secretary, Evelyn Lincoln, came in and whispered in his ear, “Two minutes.” The President walked into Mrs. Lincoln’s office to watch the countdown to the liftoff of the rocket carrying the first American into space. Kennedy saw his wife through a doorway and called, “Come in and watch this.” These photos, taken by official White House photographer Cecil W. Stoughton, are published in the hardcover book titled, ‘Portrait of Camelot –a thousand days in the Kennedy White House’.
