Corriverton in pre-anniversary clean-up

STAFFERS of several business entities, residents and members of the
Municipality of Corriverton, Corentyne, Region 6 (East Berbice
(Corentyne) took part in a clean-up campaign organized by the Upper
Corentyne Chamber of Commerce and Industry (UCCCI) last weekend, a
few days ahead of the 41st anniversary of the establishment  of the
town.
Vice President of the UCCCI, Hemnchand Jaichand, said that UCCCI members
apart, participants in the exercise  included staffers from Republic Bank and the Demerara Bank,
Demerara Distillers Limited, Banks DIH, Guyana Sugar Corporation,
the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Corriverton,  and the Upper
Corentyne Industrial Training Centre.
The Centre provided a bobcat excavator for the exercise, and other
equipment support was received from residents Mohamed Zaladin who
provided his bulldozer, and Imran Shaffeeullah who provided  his Hymac.
The exercise lasted from 7:00hrs to noon.
Jaichand said that the participants picked up garbage alongside the
roadway in the town, but the major challenges were garbage in the #78
Village koker and around the market, where the heavy
equipment had to be used.
The UCCCI is hoping that their initiative, the enthusiastic
involvement of the volunteers, and the visible improvement,  will send
a message to the rest of the residents in the town  about the
importance of proper disposal of garbage, cleanliness and  beauty
of surroundings.
This was specially important, Jaichand said, given that Corriverton
is a border town, the first to be seen by a visitor from neighbouring
Suriname or French Guiana.
Jaichand said that the clean-up exercise continued through the week,
though on a smaller scale.
