Rival woman loses lip in fight over man
A FIGHT between two women rivals resulted in one losing her bottom lip after suffering a vicious bite from her opponent. The episode was related to Magistrate Fabayo Azore when Nicola Benjamin, 22, formerly of Courtland, Corentyne, but currently residing in Montserrat and Shermoly Welch, of Ulverston, Corentyne, appeared in court.
Benjamin, who is charged with felonious wounding, returned to her homeland on vacation and was informed that her reputed husband is having an affair with Welch.
Police Inspector Satrohan Dayaram, prosecuting, said that apparently, unaware of Benjamin’s presence, Welch, on August 10, went to Courtland, where she saw the former and they began to exchange words.
The prosecutor said the quarrel became heated and developed into a fist fight which attracted a crowd.
Dayaram said Welch bit off the upper left side portion of Benjamin’s lip and the latter responded by biting off her rival’s entire bottom lip and spewing it out.
Welch, whose mouth was bandaged when she appeared at Whim Court, another part of Corentyne, was ordered to post $20,000 bail after pleading not guilty to unlawful wounding.
Benjamin was granted her pre-trial freedom on a $200,000 bond and the case has been transferred to Albion Court for September 27.
