Berbice convict jailed for city shoplifting

MAGISTRATE Hazel Octive-Hamilton yesterday sentenced Derrick Persaud (no address given) to six months imprisonment for shoplifting.
The prisoner admitted stealing four knives, valued $2,450, from Guyana Stores Ltd in Georgetown, when he pleaded guilty to the August 12 offence.
Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, said a security guard saw when the thief put the knives in his back pants pocket and pass the cashier on his way out of the store.
The guard arrested Persaud and took him to the nearby mobile police outpost.
The prosecutor said the convict confessed to the theft and asked the guard to pay for the merchandise but told the court he stole the knives because he wanted money to travel back to Berbice.
