Aunt, niece refused bail on false passport charges

AN AUNT and her niece, from The Dominican Republic, were remanded to prison, last Tuesday, on charges of tendering forged passports to an immigration officer at Moleson Creek, Corentyne, Berbice. Before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton, 45-year-old Meglina Cruz Rez and Reneilda Cruz Contriaz, 30, were charged, indictably, with having, on August 11, at the Moleson Creek Immigration Service, with intent to defraud, uttered false travel documents to immigration officer George.
Rez is alleged to have presented a forgery from St. Kitts and Nevis and Contriaz one from Antigua and Barbuda.
Defence Counsel George Thomas failed in his application for their pre-trial liberty as the magistrate upheld the objection by Police Corporal Venetta Pindar, prosecuting.
The prosecutor pointed out that both women are foreign nationals and pose flight risks and at her request, the cases were transferred to Springlands Court, at Corentyne, Berbice, too, for August 25.
