THE 53rd Caribbean Table Tennis Championships officially got under way with a formal ceremony at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) and will run until August 19.Present at the launching yesterday afternoon were Acting President Sam Hinds who delivered the feature address, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr Frank Anthony, President of the Caribbean Regional Table Tennis Association Juan Zila and Director of Sport Neil Kumar who also made brief remarks.
Among the participating teams present at the ceremony were Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Haiti, Guadeloupe, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, St Vincent, St Lucia, and St Kitts. Both the Minister and Director of Sport were on the same page as they welcomed the guest countries, as they stressed their commitment to put their resources into the development of sport.
President of the Guyana Table Tennis Association, and Commissioner of Police Henry Greene stated that they were pleased to have been given the opportunity to host the tournament and it showed that Guyana had the capacity to run a championship though given late notice.
However, the President wasted no time in welcoming the other participants and wishing them the best throughout the competition.
The ceremony also had an entertaining display of instrumentals from the Police Band that was lately awarded the Medal of Service.
The tournament gets under way daily from 09:30hrs and will run until evening.
