Pitbulls stop Super Stars in warm-up fixture

GEORGETOWN Pitbulls warmed up for tomorrow night’s Hits and Jams Master’s Cup T20 two-day tournament, with an entertaining four-run victory over the Hits and Jams Super Stars lineup at  the Demerara Cricket Club ground yesterday afternoon. An almost packed venue of spectators and cricket enthusiasts, including vice-president and secretary of the Guyana Cricket Board Faizul Bacchus and Anand Sanasie, along with president of the Georgetown Cricket Association Roger Harper, watched as the Christopher Barnwell-led Georgetown Pitbulls came away with a nail-biting victory.
Batting first in hazy conditions, the Pitbulls who face New Line Cavaliers in their semi- final fixture tomorrow afternoon in the first match at the Guyana National Stadium 17:00hrs, scored 192 for 5 from their 20 overs.
Derwin Christian struck an unbeaten 49 which took him 17 balls to accumulate and was decorated with four sixes and three fours, while Shemroy Barrington also made 49 (4×4, 2×6) off 35 balls and Steven Jacobs 39 from 28 balls, with the same number of boundaries as Barrington.
After losing Trevon Griffith who made 22 from 16 balls with two fours and a similar number of sixes, Jacobs and Barrington added 70 for the second wicket from 8.2 overs for the Pitbulls who were led by West Indies T20 all-rounder Christopher Barnwell in the absence of appointed skipper Ramnaresh Sarwan.
Hits and Jams Super Stars vice-captain Leon Johnson took 3 for 37 and returned with the bat to hit an unbeaten 57 from 38 balls with four sixes and two fours, but his team needed to score 15 runs off the final over which was bowled by Griffith.
Even though Robin Bacchus struck the second delivery for a six, his lone maximum that went along with the three fours he struck in his 33 and Troy Gonsalves and Jeetendra Sookdeo contributing 32 and 31 respectively, the Super Stars lineup still fell short as Jacobs took 2 for 47.
Gonsalves struck four sixes and one four in his innings that lasted 16 balls while Sookdeo struck three fours and two sixes from the 25 balls he faced for his 31.
Tomorrow, the Super Stars whose lineup also includes talismanic Jamaican opener Chris Gayle, along with Danza Hyatt, Andre Russell and Dwayne Bravo, will oppose national T20 champions Universal DVD Club Berbice Titans in the feature match from 20:00hrs.
