HOUSEWIFE Kemrajie Appanna, of Enterprise, East Coast, Demerara yesterday told Justice Winston Patterson and a mixed jury at the Demerara Assizes of the night when three men whom she did not recognize attacked her home, killing her husband Davechand Appanna and chopping her into a state of unconsciousness. The witness, who also disclosed that the men, after attacking her and her husband, left the premises by means of the back door, was challenged by the defence causing her to admit that such a statement could not be truthful, since she admitted that she fell unconscious from a blow to the head, and only regained consciousness on a hospital bed.
The witness recalled that on August 17, 2004, she and her husband went to bed around 1.30hrs. Later, they were awakened by the barking of dogs.
When they peeped out from a window, they saw a man removing panes from a louvre window.
Two men in camouflage outfits appeared and one of them stabbed Appanna with a knife, his wife told the court.
The witness said that one of the men took a cutlass from the kitchen; one of the men collected a cutlass from the kitchen and began chopping her on the head.
Under cross-examination by Mr. Basil Williams for the No. 1 accused, witness admitted that if the chop on the head had left her unconscious, then it would be untruthful for her to say by what means the men left the premises.
Witness admitted that most of what she told the judge and jury about what had happened on the day in question, she did not tell the Magistrate at the preliminary inquiry, when the matter would have been fresher in her mind.
The accused, Kennese Glasgow, called ‘Zachery’ or ‘Juma’, and Dexter Headley, called ‘Mas’, are indicted with having murdered Davechand Appanna on August 17, 2004 .
Prosecuting in the matter is Ms. Teshana James-Lake, in association with Miss Zamilla Ali from the DPP Chambers.
The hearing continues today.
