… Regupol inspectors expected in three weeks…
FOLLOWING the conclusion of their early morning visit to the Leonora-based construction area of Guyana’s synthetic track, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr Frank Anthony and his Ministry’s Permanent Secretary Alfred King expressed pleasure with the progress of work to date. They both made the disclosure, while at the same time announcing the arrival of executives from synthetic track experts Regupol to Guyana in three weeks time to conduct an investigation, with regard to the laying of the surface of the Class Two track.
“Judging from the last time I was here, I can see significant progress. The track is now taking shape, but there is quite a bit of work to be done before we can get the first phase of the three-phase project completed.
“Despite the adverse weather that has been plaguing the country so far, we have spoken to the contractor, Courtney Benn Construction Services Limited, who has increased his workforce to ensure the completion of the first phase, even though we are behind our scheduled time frame.
“Nevertheless, we are pushing ahead and I expect to see the first phase of the work completed within the next two to three weeks, at which time Regupol is expected to be here to advise us on any remedial works that may need to be done. But generally speaking, I am pleased with the progress of work so far,” said Dr. Anthony.
The Permanent Secretary echoed the sentiments of his Minister, while adding that the bid for the next two phases has already been contracted out, with the respective winners to be made public soon.
King said he is impressed with the work that has been completed so far, with regard to phase one, while adding that Regupol would need just under two months to lay the track which is already manufactured and is in the process of being packed in preparation for shipment to Guyana.
He further stated that by mid-May 2012, Guyana should welcome the completion of its first synthetic track, which Project Manager of Design Construction Services Limited, Patrick Pitt, said is approximately 24 inches above the level of the West Coast Demerara carriageway.
