THE Jamaicans can boast about their rock steady and Reggae, the Trinidadians can boast about their Caribbean Carnival while we in Guyana can boast about noise.
Yes Mr. Editor, in this country anywhere you turn you are bombarded by noise, the people selling their music CDs make a lot of noise as they pass along. The minibus operators try to outdo each other with noise and here the Home Affairs Minister can take some credit since he allowed them to play their ‘radios.’
Almost every corner is a sound box dishing out noise, in the vicinity of Commerce and Hincks Streets there is continuous noise. The sales people in the business places around can hardly hear the customers, going through Longden Street is continuous noise and each vendor and the store owners all with sound boxes blaring away.
I live beside the East Bank Demerara Road and ever so often a vehicle would pass with the music so loud that the window panes would rattle for those few seconds. As for the lorries , the drivers are not satisfied with a pip or two of their fog horns as they would keep blowing for as long as ten seconds .
Due to the never-ending noise, most Guyanese are a little hard of hearing without knowing.
Not forgetting the people who leave their car alarms on when parked on the road side.
The noise nuisance is menacing
