I ADD my absolute acquiescence to the refusal of President Bharrat Jagdeo, in saying that government will not offer any apology to Nation of Islam Adviser, Akbar Muhammad. Akbar Muhammad was detained, last month, on suspicion of being involved in drugs and terrorism. I have my reasons for agreeing with President Jagdeo, and I think that they are most valid.
Irrespective of the fact that law enforcement agencies had intelligence and information (regarding drugs and national security), it is not, and must never be seen as a perpetration of harassment, discrimination and targeting. The law enforcement fraternity here in Guyana has a mandate to protect the general citizenry of Guyana. If ever it feels that there is a need to conduct routine checks, so be it. Traffic officers do the same if and when they are ‘tipped off.’ So all the brouhaha is totally unjustified! I am sure, that if the checks were not made, and an attack had ensued or a drug deal had gone ‘good,’ then these same critics would have accused the government of being in dereliction. So yes, the charging of”… (the implicated) three persons with treason,” is to be seen for what it is: protecting Guyana. I am so glad that the incident regarding the Minister of Housing, Irfaan Ali, was highlighted. It is distasteful, but one simply has to subject himself to the ‘rules of the land.’ Whether the USA or Germany.
I am also wondering how many times Minister Louis Farrakhan has had to call Mr. George Bush or Mr. Barack Obama, regarding similar incidents. These types of incidents occur daily in the USA.
I close by seeking to make this issue even more necessary and relevant. Here in Guyana, we have a tendency to esteem all from ‘overseas’ as better than we are. Thus the local rules of law and culture seem to go into a negatory state. This should never be. Guyanese (know full well) going to visit or live in any part of the world, have no choice but to submit to the given rules and regulations. This is proper and right. So the same must prevail here.
President Jagdeo absolutely correct in his apology refusal
