Masakenari Community receives $2,000,000 grant from Government

TOSHAO Paul Chekema yesterday received, on behalf of the villagers of Masakenari, a cheque valued $2M from the Government of Guyana.
This money represents a commitment made by President Bharrat Jagdeo towards the village during the National Toshao Conference held late last year.

This fund will be used to upgrade the existing water distribution system in the village. Masakenari would have benefitted already from a tractor and trailer along with an all terrain vehicle (ATV), these were all commitments that were made by the President to that community, as part of the administration’s drive to improve the standard of living for Amerindians.
The Toshao, Paul Chekema expressed gratitude to the Regional Administration and the President for all the support and efforts made towards his community.
Regional Executive Officer (REO) of Region 9 Mr. Ronald Harsawack told the Toshao and team that the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) Administration has always valued the contribution of Amerindians and have now created a playing field where Amerindians can now rightfully take their place as first class citizens in our society.
He further stated that these interventions by the President are replicated throughout the region as well as other hinterland areas. He assured the Toshao of the continued support and commitment of the Government.
Masakenari, a Wai Wai community, is the most remote village in Guyana, located in the Deep South of the Rupununi. It is home to 280 persons.
