DIGICEL Guyana on Friday made good on its promise to assist single mother of five, Sandy Accra, of 943 Parfait Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, when much needed groceries were delivered.
On February 14 last, during Digicel’s 4th anniversary celebrations, the cell phone service gave Accra $1M to purchase furniture for her home which was void of the basic amenities.
Digicel recognised the need of the family when Sandy’s son, Keron Accra, 13, was reunited with his mother and four siblings after three years.
He was in the care of the Ministry of Social Services as a result of his mother’s inability to support five children on her own.
Yesterday, the one-flat concrete house was furnished with chairs, table, a freezer, a microwave, beds, kitchen utensils, clothing among other things.
Harris Paints also came on board with Digicel Guyana and they volunteered to have the Accra house painted, and they also provided the painters for the job.
Sandy Accra, standing proudly in front of her home yesterday, said that she is very grateful for the kind contributions of both Digicel Guyana and Harris Paints in making her dream come true.
She expressed her profound gratitude yesterday during the handing over ceremony.
Digicel Chief Executive Officer, Gregory Dean, in brief remarks, said that the continuous donation is part of the gift from Digicel, in which four families were assisted.
He thanked Harris Paints for its contribution.
Dean added that Digicel will complete its project with the construction of a house for Leslyn Williams, 31, a mother of seven, whose dilapidated house had collapsed during a heavy downpour at Bare Root, East Coast Demerara. Williams has received $2M to rebuild.
Meanwhile, Harris Paints Retail Manager, Garfield Manasseh, said that the company views its contribution as a good cause, brightening the lives of the Accra family. Harris Paints is willing to make other such contributions.
