Countrywide workshops dealing with youth problems to be held

-as part of  observation of the International Year of Youth
AS  part of the activities planned for the International Year of Youth, the Government of Guyana in collaboration with the United ations and several other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) will be hosting workshops countrywide to tackle youths that are influenced negatively by society’s catastrophes.
According to the Director of Youth, Ministry Of Culture Youth and Sport, Carl Brandon, the vision is to bring to Guyana a movement that provides leadership and guidance through strategic networking, strengthened partnerships and dialogue among youth and leaders in the Guyanese society.

He noted that greater concentration will be placed on advancing youths through the establishment of youth bodies within the regions and possibly at the national level.

These groups will be expected to provide a voice for these adolescents and can facilitate youth mainstreaming among others that will ensure that the ministry is on top of the situation affecting youths, thus paving a smooth pathway for their future.

In addition, he pointed out that the ministry is looking to have the National Youth Award initative, which will seek to honour and recognise youths who have contributed significantly to youth development and empowerment.

He said emphasis will be placed on the conduct of civic education sessions through the use of a manual to transmit knowledge, develop skills and ultimately change attitudes in the various areas.

Brandon added that since the face of crime is getting younger in Guyana, the ministry will seek to confront the high level of young men and women involved in criminal activities through sessions intended to equip community leaders with the knowledge and skills needed for establishing youth-friendly communities.

The International Year of Youth kicked off with calls from United Nations officials to yoke the talents and vigour of the world’s young people.

The observance of International Year of Youth 2010-2011 goes with the theme ‘Dialogue and Mutual Understanding’.

In December 2009, the United Nations adopted resolution 64/134, proclaiming the International Year of Youth from August 12, 2010 to August 11, 2011, during which awareness would be raised about the situation of young people around the world, increase youth participation in decision-making processes and the promotion of youth as a smart investment.

The year aims to reach across generations, cultures, religions and civilisations and promote the morals of peace, respect for human rights and solidarity.
