The Region 2 Administration on Tuesday held an urgent meeting in the regional boardroom at Anna Regina with officers of the Drainage and Irrigation Department, Town Council, Neighbourhood Demcoratic Councils and the Rice Producers Association, to make preparations for the upcoming predicted dry season.
Regional Chairman Ali Baksh said
reports from the Ministry of Agriculture have indicated that the weather is expected to change to a drier period within another few weeks.
According to Baksh, Region 2 is an agricultural region and currently more than 32,500 acres are cultivated with rice.
He pointed out that water is important to sustain the growth of the crop and as such every effort will be made by the administration to safeguard water in its irrigation canals and conservancies.
Baksh said farmers must use water with care in light of the upcoming change in the weather pattern.
Regional Vice Chairman Vishnu Samaroo also called on overseers and rangers to monitor conservancies and irrigation canals.
