I take great offence at the idea of a joint opposition party, seeking to contest the upcoming elections. Now even though I am not totally immersed into everyday politics, I know enough to feel totally insulted by this ruse that is in the offing. It is a joke at best, and I hope that more Guyanese will speak out.
For one, the PNCR has always been about exploitation. All that I have to do is recall the early 1960s. During this troubled era, the PNC joined forces with TUF (The United Force) to create mayhem in Guyana. When the ‘dust settled’ PNC looked good, and the expendable TUF fell by the wayside. After all, Mr. L.F. S. Burnham wanted leadership of British Guiana ‘come what may.’ So he duped TUF, and Peter D’aguiar into ‘aiding and abetting’ his evil cause. So at least I am not fooled.
Secondly, the PNCR is really a spent force. Back in the 1960s, a more viable PNC used and ditched TUF. Now it seems that in utter desperation, the PNCR is seeking some buttressing. So anyone who could be duped into a coalition will be most welcome. Currently, within the PNCR, there seems to be much prevailing uneasiness. David Granger has failed miserably to ‘fire’ any one’s imagination. And as far I can see, Robert Corbin is still playing a ‘wait and see’ game. He must have something when it is all ‘said and done.’
I ask the people to just examine the parties (outside the PNCR) and see if any of them amounts to anything. For example, the WPA died with Dr. Rodney. Dr. Rupert Roopnarine (even though he has a name), seems least bothered by political happenings. In fact, I ask anyone to show me a visible constituency for any one of them. So again, one has to look carefully at the PNCR.
So yesterday (Friday 24th June) is a big day, but big for whom? Potentially for the PNCR, since it is clutching at straws, but these straws will be burnt soon.
