A COMMITTEE has been named to investigate reports that 64 third form students of New Amsterdam Multilateral School (NAMS) were sent home, last week, because they were not in possession of the Literature text book ‘A Brighter Sun’. Subsequently, Chairman of Region Six (East Berbice/Corentyne), Mr. Zulficar Mustapha said he is awaiting the report on the probe, after which the School Board might make a decision.
Last June 13, the students concerned were instructed, by the Acting Deputy Headmaster, Mr. Narinedat Dhanraj, not to return for classes until they, each, acquired the $1,200 book.
Some of them complied with the order while others sneaked back into the school unnoticed.
Reports said the students had, previously, been given six weeks to secure the book but some parents are claiming that although it is necessary for their children’s education, the cost would put an additional burden on expenses they cannot afford, including to pay a minimum $800, daily, for the students to travel across the Berbice River Bridge.
