Guyana’s LCDS receives high praise from ACTO Secretary General

HIS Excellency Alejandro Gordillo, the Secretary General of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organisation (ACTO), in an interview with the Government Information Agency (GINA) on his initial visit to Guyana, said that Guyana has been doing a great job in keeping its forest intact.
“I have been reading a report from International Tropical Timber Organisation (ITTO) that said that Guyana is one of the countries with best forest practice management in the world,” Secretary General Gordillo said.

Gordillo also noted that the forest today plays a tremendous role in mitigating the effects of global warming and Guyana’s efforts in that fight against climate change should be lauded.
He also said that this year being dedicated as International Year for Forest will help to create the type of consciousness needed to sustain the tropical forest, the world’s most valuable asset.
Ambassador Gordillo also had the opportunity to meet Head of the Presidential Secretariat Dr.Roger Luncheon, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Carolyn Rodrigues- Birkett, and Agriculture Minister Robert Persaud.
He is also expected to meet with President Bharrat Jagdeo and other Cabinet members.
Ambassador Gordillo will also be visiting the Golden Grove/ Belfield Mangrove Reserve on the East Coast Demerara during his stay from June 12-15.
The Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization, (ACTO) is an international organization which is responsible for enhancing and strengthening cooperation amongst member states in the Amazon region.
The organization, in its present form, was derived from the Amazon Cooperation Treaty (ACT) which was signed on July 3, 1978 by Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela, to promote joint actions towards the harmonious development of the Amazon Basin.
