2011 murders of live-alone women remain unsolved

ROGUE elements known to their victims have, within recent times, particularly this year, put their focus on women who lived alone.

The well orchestrated brutal murders have, to date, remained unsolved with no charges laid, although several persons were, initially, detained and questioned.

The first of the murders occurred last February 15, with the body of Prempattie Ramsundar called ‘Auntie Daro’ discovered in her Lot 88 Second Street, Newtown, Enmore, East Coast Demerara house.

The corpse of the 58-year-old woman with marks of violence and her hands tied was in the kitchen which had been ransacked.

A sister, who made the discovery, said there was no sign of forced entry and she believed her dead sibling knew her attacker and voluntarily opened her door. There were ashes in the house, indicating that someone had been smoking and $500,000 cash was missing.

Neighbours had heard screams at around 03:00 hrs but did not investigate.

Police Crime Chief Seelall Persaud said, yesterday, that  in the Ramsundar case, several persons were questioned but released.

On March 4, schoolgirls found 74-year-old Khirul Najidam also known as Babloo Saddick in a storeroom located in the lower flat of her Lot 1215 Gaulding Place, South Ruimveldt Park, Georgetown home.

She was bound and gagged and her premises, too, were ransacked.

Najidam was last seen alive about noon the same day in the building where she operated a small business selling confectionery and pickled mangoes to schoolchildren.

Some customers went to make purchases about 15:00 hrs and, getting no response to their calls, ventured inside and discovered the septuagenarian dead.

One neighbour claimed to have seen three boys running from the house some time before but thought nothing of it because some youths would often try to steal the woman’s fruits.

Persaud said a few people were also apprehended and questioned about that killing but, again, no one was charged.

On April 19, the partly nude body of 68-year-old Sukhdai Ramkilaum called ‘Mama Rose’ and ‘Rosaline’ was found in a pool of blood in the bedroom of her Lot 80 Vryheid’s Lust North residence, also on East Coast Demerara. Her throat had been slit and her home was ransacked.  Like the other victims, she lived alone.

Her nephew and next door neighbour said the first sign that he and his wife got about something amiss was when his aunt did not respond to their calls.

He said his wife observed blood dripping from the floor boards of his aunt’s house to the ground below and contacted the Police.

Persaud confirmed that, in that investigation also, people were grilled but no charges were laid.
