Health Ministry flood response continues, no outbreaks of diseases reported

The Ministry of Health continues to monitor the flooding situation in Region 9 (Upper Takutu/Upper Essequibo) and the Kwakwani area and to date there has been no outbreaks of diseases reported. According to the Health Ministry, there have been reports of a fall in water levels in Region 9 and environmental officers are assisting in cleaning up.
However, the Ministry notes that the increase in the water level in Kwakwani area by some 12 inches is cause for concern.
Additionally, the ministry disclosed that the heavy rains in other hinterland areas are being monitored, although there are no reports of major flooding in other areas and additional supplies to maintain readiness have been acquired.
In Lethem, the Ministry of health is undertaking several initiatives, including:
* Outreaches continue to be conducted. Six shelters were visited and health education done.
* Forty eight patients were seen at Lethem Hospital; one admission- Malaria; twelve cases of viral diarrhoea. No major cases, i.e. vomiting/ diarrehoea or no water borne disease was detected.
* All sub-districts are adequately stocked with drugs and supplies.
* Medex. Karen Sears (Georgetown) was deployed to Karasabai, Medex. C. Reid assigned to allocate the near- to- term pregnant mothers.
* Water level has dropped significantly and some roads have become accessible in the Lethem area.
* Thirty gallons Jeyes fluid and six spray cans were sent in yesterday.
* Mosquito nets, disinfectants, and Chloro-sol will be distributed today to various villages.
The Health Ministry maintains that its interventions for flood relief and recovery will continue as necessary.
