Amaila road on schedule for August

-but for light traffic
TECHNICAL Adviser to the Ministry of Public Works and Communications, Walter Willis, says the Amaila road will be sufficiently completed by August to allow for the passage of light four by four vehicles.
He made this disclosure during an interview with the Guyana Chronicle on Tuesday.
Willis said that a team of consultants have just returned from the construction site of the Amaila Falls Hydro-electric Project road being constructed by Synergy Holdings Limited.
“The consultants came out on Saturday. They have to prepare their report [after which I would be in a position to speak further],” Willis said.
He had earlier confirmed that the Synergy is aiming to outsource some of the work given the time that has elapsed and the volume of work yet to be completed.
President of Synergy Holdings Inc, Makeshwar ‘Fip’ Motilall, was up to one month ago speaking with a pair of potential sub-contractors with a view to speeding up works on the Amaila Falls road, following Cabinet’s strong suggestion to move in this direction.
Willis however noted that government at this point could only advise Motilall, but noted that he was receptive to the idea. Willis said if government were to appoint an entity to complete the works, it would have no legal recourse for claiming lateness penalties as stipulated in the contract should the work still not be completed within the specified time-frame.
Willis said:  “We advised him that he should sub-contract. He started discussions with a pile-driving entity and a transport entity to haul materials.”
Motilall’s company Synergy Holdings Inc secured a US$15M contract for the construction of the road leading to the site of the Amaila Falls Hydroelectric Project.
The progress of the works was dogged by rain earlier in the year and a shortage of materials and manpower, prompting Cabinet to consider the option of Synergy’s sub-contracting elements of the ongoing works.
