THE SCINDAPSUS (skin-dap-sus), better known as The Devil’s Ivy, is an indoor plant and member of the Araceae family of plants, meaning that like the Anthurium Lily, for instance, it is a monocotyledonous flowering plant whose flowers are borne on a type of inflorescence called a spadix. A climbing, vine-like plant, the Scindapsus boasts stems that can reach 10 to 40 feet in height, and dark green heart-shaped leaves marbled with gold, white or yellow colorations.
Native to the forests of Southeast Asia, it can also be found in the Solomon Islands, and is considered endemic to that country.
Though not an ivy by definition, many people refer to it as such because of its climbing and trailing nature. The Scindapsus is an immensely popular indoor plant not only here in Guyana but the world over.
The plant can be encouraged to climb walls and other structures, or grown in hanging baskets with a cascade effect. Another noteworthy feature of the plant is its ability to purify the air indoors.
A study conducted by the USA’s National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and done by an American scientist named B.C Wolverton found that the Scindapsus is one of the top 10 plants for indoors air purification.
Wolverton’s findings were published in a book titled, ‘How to Grow Fresh Air: 50 House Plants that Purify Your Home or Office’ .
