Media houses should not misrepresent facts

Another media house, in its inimitable fashion, skewed its story on Labour Minister Manzoor Nadir’s resignation as leader of that party and the appointment of Ms Valerie Garribo-Lowe as the new head of that political to suit its own agenda, as is normal.
This blatant misrepresentation of facts could be adjudged from the report in another media house, which is highly critical of the government, but which, in this instance, accurately reported on the facts; and while prejudiced detractors can dismiss the contention if Chronicle alone had reported on the actual facts, it is highly improbable that they would not view as truth information provided by the Stabroek News.
The article was written by one of its most seasoned reporters, so it is improbable that several blatant misrepresentations of facts could be blamed on reportage by inexperienced and untutored staff.
The article stated in the first paragraph “Manzoor Nadir, who has served as a Government Minister in the incumbent PPP/C administration since 2001, yesterday (Tuesday) resigned from The United Force (TUF).”
This is blatant mischief-making, with the potential to create much political strife, because Nadir did not resign from TUF.  He still retains membership within that party and is serving within the PPP/C administration as a representative of TUF in what was proven to be a highly-successful coalition between the PPP/C, TUF, and other civic partners, including the Prime Minister, who was drawn into that composition from GUARD by Dr. Jagan, who fielded most of the members of the Civic component in the original PPP/C grouping.  Present members of the current cabinet that came from other groupings subsequently joined after Dr. Jagan’s passing.
The reporter even spelled the party’s prime ministerial candidate’s name wrong, because the man’s name is Ismail Muhammad, by way of which he was introduced and alluded to – by both himself and his party leader.  Kaieteur News reported the man’s name as Joseph, which is exhibiting total disrespect.  Even if that was the gentleman’s surname before his conversion to the Moslem faith, Muhammad is the name that he has chosen as more significant and with which he now identifies, but Kaieteur News has always exhibited a predilection for disrespecting persons, without an iota of regret or apology for embarrassment or problems suffered as a result of their distortions.
Obviously hoping to create a rift between Nadir and the PPP/C administration, the reporter wrote “Nadir endorsed the comments  of the party executive, Marcir Borreto, that the Presidential grants, or “handouts” given out to Amerindian leaders for projects in their communities have not worked because the projects were not properly planned  so the projects end up failing.”
Nadir did not endorse the comments by Mr. Borreto.  He instead said “I know that we have seen significant changes and I have been part of driving those changes among all communities, including Amerindian communities.”  While acceding that the concerns of the new team as an indictment on him also, Nadir said “I take that as a sincere comment on behalf of the new team.”
Another mischievous contention that that media house published without qualms, despite knowing that they were not telling the truth, was that GINA did not release the list of awardees to that newspaper in time for publication in sync with other print media.
By now the credibility of that media house is synonymous with that of a “star” columnist. People or organisations with high moral standing apologise when caught making faux paus.
