RAFEEK Shaw (no address given) was fined $20,000 with the alternative of six weeks imprisonment yesterday for beating his wife. The defendant pleaded guilty, before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus at Vreed-en-Hoop Court, West Coast Demerara, to unlawfully assaulting Lalita Chandra on May 3.
About the 07:30hrs incident, Shaw declared: “I didn’t get to hit her good.”
He claimed that he and the virtual complainant had been drinking before going to bed but he awoke later that night to find her missing.
Shaw said he found Chandra elsewhere late that night.
In addition to the fine, he was bonded to keep the peace for a year.
Shaw was one of two defendants who faced similar charges in the same Court.
The other man, Garvin (only name given) pleaded not guilty to the unlawful assault of Keith Robinson, on May 10, at Parika Bus Park, East Bank Essequibo.
The defendant was put on $20,000 bail until his July 27 trial.
