Thief dressed in stolen clothes opts for imprisonment

A THIEF, who stole clothes from Albion Estate employee Manoj Kumar Beepat, was fined $50,000 on Thursday, when he appeared in court wearing them.
Hukumchand Dalchand, 44, of Canefield, East Canje, pleaded guilty to breaking and entering and larceny, before Magistrate Faboya Azore, at Albion Court,
Corentyne, also in Berbice. But the convict, who was given an alternative of three months imprisonment, opted to serve the jail term.
Police prosecutor, Corporal Roberto Figueira,  said, last April 11, the virtual complainant, who lives alone, secured his home and went to work . However, shortly afterwards, he received a telephone call, from a neighbour, informing him that an intruder was in his house.
The prosecutor said, when he arrived on the scene, Beepat found the padlock on the door to the lower flat open and Dalchand dressed in his red jersey and blue denim jeans, in which was a wallet containing local and foreign currency valued a total G$$7,400.
Dalchand was arrested by a policeman, who responded to a report to Rose Hall Outpost, Corentyne.
