A five-year-old child drowned in the Corentyne River, after she ran ahead of her mother to have a usual bath in the waterway on Easter Monday.
Nickara France, of Line Path Squatting area, Skeldon, Corentyne, was sent ahead with her peer to the sea wall where it was customary for the children to have their bath. However, her mother Nicola France, reported that she followed behind, on the 150 feet trek, but when she arrived the child was nowhere to be seen.
Another child, who had accompanied Nickara in running ahead to the sea wall, related that Nickara had gone into the water. A subsequent search revealed the lifeless body of the nursery school child.
The body was taken to the Skeldon Public Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
A Post mortem examination will be conducted later in the week. (Jeune Bailey Vankeric)
